Ex-German international, Gerald Asamoah, has thrown his support behind Chris Hughton to remain as the Black Stars’ trainer.
After a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Madagascar, Ghana faced a setback with a narrow defeat to Comoros, leading to increased calls for Hughton’s dismissal.
Speaking on Joysport, Gerald urged the Ghana Football Association not to terminate Hughton’s contract but rather to offer him a long-term deal to build the team.
“What we need is continuity. Somebody who will be there for long enough to say we have a project for five years, and this is the coach we are going with,” Asamoah told JoySports.
“[In here] Otto Addo came, and he didn’t stay even for a year, then Chris came.”
“[We need to identify] a coach and say ‘we have a project with you. In five years, we want to be there.’ So then, you need to believe the coach and work with the coach.
“This is what I can say to the members [of the GFA]. It will be a good idea to keep the coach for long,” he added.
The Black Stars will now shift their focus to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), set to be staged in Ivory Coast in January.”
