A fire has destroyed the family home of the late Tamale Central Member of Parliament, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, in Tamale, Northern Region, displacing the occupants of the property.
The domestic fire broke out at about 16:00 local time on Wednesday in Changli, a suburb of Tamale. The house was extensively affected and was ultimately destroyed by the blaze.
Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service were sent to the property after receiving a distress call. They managed to bring the fire under control before it could spread to nearby houses.
However, the Northern Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service, Assistant Divisional Officer Grade I Hudu Baba, said a number of properties had already been destroyed by the time the response team reached the scene.
The cause of the fire has not yet been established.
The incident involved the residence recognised as the family house of Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, who served as the Member of Parliament for Tamale Central before his death. The fire left those living at the property displaced.
Emergency personnel focused on containing the blaze and preventing it from reaching surrounding homes in the Changli area. Their intervention stopped the flames from spreading further, although the extent of the damage to the affected property was already significant when they arrived.
No cause has been given for the outbreak, and no further details about the circumstances surrounding the fire have been established. Authorities have yet to determine how it started or what may have triggered it.
The Ghana National Fire Service has confirmed that its personnel responded to the emergency and secured the immediate area from further spread. Its account of the incident indicates that the fire had affected several properties before the response team was able to control it.
The destroyed building remains linked to the family of the late Tamale Central MP, making the incident particularly significant in the local community. The occupants were forced to leave the property after the blaze.
