Ghana winger Abdul Fatawu Issahaku impressed on his Ipswich Town debut as the club began life back in the English Premier League with a 2-1 victory over Sunderland.

The Black Stars player started the match and played 66 minutes as Ipswich marked their return to the elite division with a hard-fought win. Jack Clarke settled the contest by scoring the decisive goal in the 90th minute.

Issahaku joined Ipswich Town during the off-season from Leicester City, who were then in the EFL Championship. His first appearance for the club offered an early indication of the attacking threat he could provide, with the 22-year-old showing confidence on the ball and a willingness to take on defenders.

The winger completed six of his 11 passes during his time on the pitch. His most eye-catching contribution came in one-on-one situations, where he successfully completed all three of the dribbles he attempted.

Issahaku also contributed without the ball as Ipswich protected their advantage against Sunderland. He recorded five defensive contributions, won two of his four attempted tackles and came out on top in 10 of 16 ground duels.

His performance combined attacking directness with defensive effort, helping Ipswich claim a winning start after their return to the Premier League. Although he was withdrawn after 66 minutes, his contribution was reflected in a disciplined display across both phases of the game.

Kasey McAteer replaced Issahaku, who could have another opportunity to feature for Ipswich Town when they face his former club Leicester City in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday, 25 August.

The fixture will give Issahaku the chance to play against the club he left for Ipswich during the off-season. After making his first appearance in Ipswich colours, he is now in line to be involved in the cup meeting with Leicester City.

For Ipswich, the 2-1 result provided a strong beginning to their return to England’s top division. Clarke’s late goal secured the points, while Issahaku’s lively debut added encouragement for the club as they start their campaign back among the elite.
