Former Ghanaian defender Rashid Sumaila has expressed his support for coach Chris Hughton, despite the Black Stars’ recent underwhelming performances.
The gaffer has faced significant scrutiny after Ghana’s mixed results in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, securing a narrow 1-0 victory against Madagascar but suffering a close defeat to Comoros.
Sumaila, emphasizing his endorsement for Hughton, urged Ghanaians to exercise patience and continue supporting the national team during this challenging period. He conveyed confidence that the team would improve over time.
“Chris Hughton must stay” he told Koforidua-based Bryt FM amid calls for the sacking of the former Brighton manager. “They will come good as time goes on, so we should exercise patience for the boys. We should all pray and support the team no matter what is the situation” he said.
As Ghana looks ahead to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Ivory Coast, Sumaila remains optimistic about the team’s potential turnaround, urging fans to rally behind the players despite the current circumstances.
