French side Olympique Lyon, home to Ghana’s Ernest Nuamah, have been officially relegated to Ligue 2 due to ongoing financial issues.
The decision was confirmed after the DNGC, the French football financial watchdog, rejected the club’s latest efforts to address their budget shortfalls.
Despite a meeting on Tuesday involving club owner John Textor and other top officials, Lyon failed to convince the regulatory body of any substantial financial turnaround.
Textor’s Eagle Football Group had earlier reported staggering debts of around £422 million, raising serious concerns about the club’s financial sustainability.
Nuamah, who featured 23 times this season before suffering a season-ending ACL injury, now faces uncertainty with his club’s future hanging in the balance.
Lyon can still appeal the decision, but if the ruling stands, Reims, who lost in the relegation playoff, will take their spot in Ligue 1 next season.
The development leaves Nuamah, one of Ghana’s most promising talents, potentially playing second-tier football in France unless a transfer materializes.
