Ghanaian football icon André “Dede” Ayew marked his long-awaited return to competitive action with a composed debut for NAC Breda, helping the struggling side secure a valuable point in a goalless draw against FC Groningen on Saturday night.

The 36-year-old captain came off the bench in the second half at the Euroborg Stadium, just days after signing a short-term deal aimed at boosting NAC Breda’s survival hopes in the Dutch Eredivisie. Bottom of the table and desperate for momentum, the visitors leaned on Ayew’s experience in a tightly contested encounter.

The match itself was cagey, with clear chances at a premium. Groningen dominated spells of the first half but were unable to break down a disciplined NAC defence, leaving the scoreline unchanged at the interval.

Ayew was introduced in the 57th minute, replacing young forward Moussa, and was warmly received by the travelling supporters. Wearing NAC’s iconic yellow and black, the former Black Stars skipper immediately brought calmness, leadership, and physical presence to the frontline.

In his 33-minute cameo, Ayew showed flashes of the qualities that have defined his career. He recorded 20 touches, completed a successful dribble, won five ground duels and two aerial battles, and forced a save with a late effort that briefly threatened to snatch all three points.

While he didn’t register a goal or assist, Ayew’s influence went beyond the statistics. His hold-up play eased pressure on the defence, and his organisation helped NAC Breda withstand Groningen’s late push to preserve a crucial clean sheet.

The draw may seem modest, but for a side locked in a relegation battle, it could prove significant.

For Dede Ayew, this was a measured first step. For NAC Breda, it may be the beginning of a vital partnership as they fight to stay afloat—guided by the experience of one of Ghana’s most decorated footballers.
