Danish Superliga side Aarhus GF have officially parted ways with Ghanaian centre-back Michael Akoto following the conclusion of the 2023/24 season.
The 27-year-old defender joined AGF in the summer of 2023 on a free transfer from German outfit Dynamo Dresden. Despite signing a two-year deal, his time in Denmark has come to an early end, with the club confirming his departure ahead of the summer transfer window.
In an official statement, the club said:
“We have to say goodbye to Michael Akoto who is leaving AGF when his contract expires this summer break.”
“Michael Akoto joined AGF in the summer of 2023 on a two-year deal, joining Aarhus on a free transfer from German club Dynamo Dresden, where Akoto was listed for 57 games and two goals in the 2nd and 3rd Bundesliga.”
“He made his debut for AGF on August 6, 2023 in a Superliga match against Hvidovre IF. However, Akoto’s time at AGF was plagued by ups and downs, and the 27-year-old German defender has only played 26 games in the white shirt.”
AGF’s sporting director, Carsten V. Jensen, expressed his appreciation for the player’s professionalism during his stay:
“For neither Michael nor us at AGF, his time here was as we had hoped. But he has always maintained his optimism and spirit, and when he has played, everyone has been able to see his quality as a defender, where he has made a difference for the team.
Akoto made 26 appearances for AGF in all competitions during his injury-hit spell.
Though born in Germany and eligible to represent the European nation, he remains uncapped by either the Black Stars of Ghana or Die Mannschaft.
