The Director-General of the National Sports Authority, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, has confirmed that work on the closed Independence Square Stand at the Accra Sports Stadium remains stalled due to a lack of funding.
The stand was shut ahead of Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifier against Chad in March, with the NSA citing ongoing renovations and safety concerns.
Despite the closure, fans were eventually allowed access to the area for the match. However, several months later, the section remains cordoned off.
“There are challenges here that we must address. We are still waiting for the release of funds to complete one of the stands to allow it to be at its capacity,” Ampofo Ankrah told Joy Sports.
He noted that audits of previous maintenance contracts have yet to be completed, making it difficult to determine the scope of outstanding work. “So far, the audits of those works are yet to be completed… From what myself and my team have gone to evaluate and assess what is happening with our venues and centres, it’s not looking good.”
The NSA chief added that a full report from the Ministry of Sports and Recreation will determine what actions are needed going forward.
With the Black Stars set to resume their World Cup qualifiers in September, hopes are high that the Accra Sports Stadium which is likely to host the next home game, will be fully operational, including the long-closed stand.
