The Portugal League Cup will begin this week with matchday No 1 of the group stage. The League Cup features a group stage with the top team in each group moving onto the knockout stages.

On Saturday, Primeira Liga team Estoril will meet Portugal Liga 2 club Tondela on matchday No 1 of the group stage. The teams will clash at Tondela’s Estadio João Cardoso.

Tondela go into the match on a poor run of form. Their last six matches all ended without a victory. Tondela are midtable in Liga 2, as they drew their last four games in the competition.

Estoril are 12th in the Liga Portugal Primeira. They too are on a run of poor form with four straight games ending without a win. Estoril’s last two games in the Primeira finished as defeats.

The Portugal League Cup will give both teams the chance to return to form. The Portugal Primeira is on a break for the World Cup in Qatar, giving these teams the chance to play in the group stage of the League Cup tournament.

Tondela were relegated from the Primeira last season, so these teams have played recently in competitive football. Estoril hold a head-to-head advantage over Tondela with four wins and two losses in their last six matches.

In 2021-22, Tondela and Estoril played three times in all competitions. Estoril did the league double over Tondela, winning away 2-1 and claiming a 1-0 victory at home.

The teams also met in the Portugal Cup. Tondela managed a 3-1 victory against Estoril in the cup fixture. Estoril are playing well on the road in the Primeira. They have a record of 3W-2D-2L away from home, with eight goals for and six against.

Tondela are the draw kings in Liga 2. They have a record of 1W-5D-1L at home with eight goals for and eight against. No team in Liga 2 has drawn more matches than Tondela.

The Gold and Greens have drawn nine out of 13 league games, as they struggle to turn stalemates into wins.

Both teams may need to rotate their teams due to the World Cup. Estoril will have leading goalscorer James Lea Siliki available for the match. Siliki, a former Rennes and Middlesbrough player, joined Estoril in the offseason. He has three goals in the Primeira.

Neither team is in form going into the match on Saturday. However, Estoril have a strong head-to-head record versus Tondela. Estoril’s quality is also higher, playing in the Primeira. The away team should pick up a narrow League Cup win by a 1-0 score.
