Janet Osei Bonsu, the mother of Ghana footballer Caleb Yirenkyi, says she does not lose sleep over the criticism or insults her son may receive while representing the Black Stars.
Speaking to Akoma 87.9 FM, Janet said scrutiny was an unavoidable part of playing football at the highest level, particularly for those selected to play for Ghana.
“I am not too worried about the insults or criticism that come my son’s way. No child puts on the Black Stars jersey without facing pressure and criticism. Since this is the career he has chosen, these things will naturally come with it,” she said.
Janet said she tries not to let negative comments affect her, even when they follow a disappointing performance from her son. Her focus, she explained, is on encouraging him to remain committed and continue developing as a player.
“I don’t pay much attention to people who criticise or insult him after a poor performance. I simply pray that he stays focused and continues to shine,” she added.
The footballer’s mother said the public reaction to players could change quickly, with praise arriving when performances are positive and criticism following when results or individual displays fall short.
For that reason, she believes criticism should be accepted as part of the wider experience of a football career rather than treated as something unusual or unexpected.
“When things are going well, people sing his praises, so why should I be bothered when criticism comes? It is all part of the journey,” she said.
Janet also reflected on the moment Caleb scored for Ghana against Panama, describing it as a particularly emotional occasion. She said she expected his displays for the national side to have an even greater impact in the future.
“I was so excited when Caleb scored against Panama. I strongly believe that, with time, his performances for the Black Stars will surprise many Ghanaians,” she said.
The goal brought her pride as both a parent and a supporter of her son’s progress on the international stage. She said watching Caleb perform for Ghana had been especially meaningful because he is her first son.
“As my first son, seeing him shine at this level fills my heart with so much joy and gratitude,” she added.
Janet’s comments underline her belief that players who represent Ghana must be prepared for both the expectations that accompany success and the reaction that follows difficult moments. Rather than allowing outside opinions to dominate her view of Caleb’s career, she said she would continue to pray for his focus and celebrate his progress with the Black Stars.
