Broos plays down Salah threat ahead of Egypt clash

South Africa head coach Hugo Broos says his side will focus on beating Egypt as a team rather than centring their game plan around Liverpool star Mohamed Salah.

Bafana Bafana head into the Group B showdown full of confidence after opening their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a 2-1 victory over Angola, sealed by a stunning strike from Lyle Foster.

Speaking ahead of the encounter, Broos warned against placing too much emphasis on individual players, insisting Egypt’s strength lies in their collective quality.

“They are such a good team. Why should we focus on one player?” Broos said. “We have to be prepared to beat the team rather than make sure Salah or Marmoush doesn’t play well. For us, it’s the team that’s important.”

South Africa are targeting top spot in the group, but face a stern test against an Egyptian side that also started the tournament strongly. The Pharaohs edged Zimbabwe 2-1 in their opener, with Salah scoring the decisive goal.

With both sides on three points, the clash promises to be a high-intensity battle as two continental heavyweights fight for control of Group B.
