Barcelona midfielder Gavi avoids serious injury after worrying Elche setback

Barcelona have been given encouraging news over Gavi’s condition after medical tests on Monday indicated that the midfielder’s latest problem is not serious.

Gavi was forced off during Barcelona’s La Liga opener against Elche after being struck on his right leg, the same leg in which he suffered a serious injury in 2023. The incident caused considerable concern at the club, but the initial findings have eased fears surrounding the 21-year-old.

The Spain international also used Instagram to reassure Barcelona supporters after the distressing moment during the match.

“Thank you to everyone who always supports me and accompanies me through thick and thin… I don’t understand football any other way, and I’m sorry for making you suffer so much,” Gavi wrote.

The injury occurred as Gavi attempted to press Elche players. An opposing player collided with his right leg, leaving him on the pitch and visibly uncomfortable. Given the history of his previous injury to the same leg, the sight immediately prompted concern among Barcelona’s players, staff and supporters.

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick reacted quickly by replacing Gavi with Pedri. Gavi was unable to continue before half-time and returned to the substitutes’ bench for the second half, where he showed clear signs of discomfort while waiting for the results of the medical assessment.

The club have not indicated that the problem is expected to keep Gavi out for a significant period. Current indications suggest that the blow is unlikely to be serious, although his availability for Barcelona’s match against Athletic Club on Thursday remains uncertain.

A decision on whether he can feature will depend on how his condition develops over the coming days. Barcelona are expected to continue monitoring the midfielder before determining whether he is fit enough to return to team training and be considered for selection.

Gavi had started the match in his usual role in Barcelona’s midfield. He had spent the recent period working to recover his full physical condition after his involvement with Spain at the World Cup, beginning his training earlier in an effort to reach the best possible level before the start of the season.

His previous knee injury had made the latest incident particularly unsettling. Gavi suffered that serious problem in 2023, and the fact that the fresh impact involved the same right leg led to immediate fears that he could face another extended absence.

Those concerns have now been reduced by Monday’s medical results, although Barcelona will wait for further developments before confirming whether he will be able to play against Athletic Club. For now, the available information points towards a short-term issue rather than a repeat of the serious injury that previously disrupted his career.
