Arsenal are close to completing one of the biggest deals of the summer transfer window after reaching an agreement with Newcastle United to sign Brazil international and captain Bruno Guimaraes.
The transfer, worth £75m, was confirmed by respected Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, who posted his trademark phrase, “Here We Go”, on his official X account. Romano reported that Arsenal had finally concluded negotiations with Newcastle United after lengthy discussions between the two clubs.
Arsenal had already agreed personal terms with the 28-year-old midfielder in July, meaning the remaining negotiations centred on reaching an agreement with his current club.
Guimaraes is set to become the latest major addition to Mikel Arteta’s squad as Arsenal prepare for the new season. The move would significantly strengthen their midfield, with the club targeting one of the Premier League’s most highly regarded players in that position.
The negotiations entered a more formal stage in recent days after contact between intermediaries developed into direct discussions between Arsenal and Newcastle United. Arsenal’s interest was driven by their desire to improve the quality and depth of their midfield as they aim to compete across all major competitions.
Newcastle had initially rejected an Arsenal offer of £70m, according to earlier reports, and demanded a higher fee for their captain. Further talks eventually produced an agreement worth £75m.
Guimaraes’ desire to move to Arsenal also helped the discussions progress. His willingness to join the London club contributed to the process moving forward and allowed the three parties to reach a final agreement.
The Brazil international has established himself as one of the leading midfielders in the Premier League since joining Newcastle United. His performances have remained consistently strong, while his importance to the team has been reflected by his status as club captain.
During last season, Guimaraes scored nine goals and provided eight assists in all competitions. Those figures have strengthened Arsenal’s belief that he can add both creativity and a goal threat to their midfield.
Arteta had previously hinted that Arsenal were working actively in the transfer market. The Spanish manager said the club’s hierarchy was focused on improving the overall quality of the squad and increasing competition for places among the players.
The arrival of Guimaraes would therefore represent a significant step in those plans. Arsenal are seeking to maintain their challenge for the Premier League title while also competing strongly in the Champions League, and the midfielder’s expected move is intended to support those ambitions.
The agreement still needs to be completed before the transfer can formally be confirmed, but Arsenal have now made substantial progress towards securing one of the most prominent signings of the summer.
