Ghana national team captain Andre Ayew has urged his team to focus on “points” rather than “revenge” against Uruguay in the upcoming World Cup.
Black Stars will lock horns with the Sky Blue team on December 2, 2022 in the final group phase match.
It is an opportunity for Otto Addo’s side to avenge the pain inflicted on Ghanaians during the 2010 World Cup, when Uruguay eliminated Ghana on penalties after Asamoah Gyan missed a penalty kick that would have sent the West African side to the semi-finals.
However, Ayew does not believe it is prudent and prefers that his teammates compete for points.
“As team leader, I don’t believe we should view this game as revenge. Instead, we must be smart enough to recognise that it is a match we need points from,” he said in an interview with Al Jazeera.
“We just want to win against Uruguay after everything that has been said in the media. As a player, if you go into a game with the intent of retaliation, you can make a lot of mistakes and be hyper.”
“We just need to stay calm, follow the plan and try to win the game, or do whatever we can to advance to the next stage.”
Before the match, Ghana will play Portugal on November 24th, followed by South Africa four days later.
