Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kwesi Nyantakyi has voiced concern over the growing trend of hooliganism in local football, linking it directly to the sport’s sponsorship struggles.
In an interview featured in an upcoming Joy Sports documentary, Nyantakyi explained that the violent behavior of fans at league matches has made the sport unattractive to potential sponsors. He argued that businesses are reluctant to associate with a sport frequently marred by chaos and misconduct.
“When violence becomes a regular feature in our football, it naturally pushes sponsors away,” said Nyantakyi. “No company wants its brand associated with disorder or illegality.”
The former CAF First Vice President called for urgent reforms and stronger enforcement to restore public confidence in the sport, emphasizing that violence undermines the integrity and commercial value of the game.
The Ghana Premier League has been operating without a title sponsor since betPawa exited the scene in late 2023; a move many believe was influenced by concerns over the game’s image and operational structure.
Nyantakyi’s remarks add to growing calls for leadership within Ghana football to take concrete steps in curbing fan misconduct and creating a more marketable product
