Midfielder Andre Ayew says Ghana’s win over Malawi is more important than the individual performance of players.
The Black Stars were far from convincing despite a 2-0 win in the first leg of the 2013 Nations Cup qualifier in Accra.
Some of the key players especially Ayew who has always come through in a Black Stars shirt was a pale shadow of himself on Saturday.
The 22-year-old was playing his first game in seven months for Ghana after recovering from an aggravated shoulder injury during the 2012 Nations Cup in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.
And the Olympique Marseille enforcer in an attempt to admit his below par performance says the emphasis should rather be on the team effort and not individual players.
“We have proved that we are together, we are united,” he said at the post-match press conference.
“If I play well tomorrow, he plays well (referring to Atsu) tomorrow and Asamoah (Gyan) plays well tomorrow the only important thing is that Ghana wins and not what he has done or he has done.
“I believe today we’ve proved a lot and we need to continue.
“We are asking you people to just help the team to push up and I know that we are going to make all of us proud.”
Ghana must now simply avoid defeat in the return encounter in Blantyre next month to secure one of the 15 available qualification slots for the finals to be hosted in South Africa early next year.
