AFCON 2023: Jordan hits brace but Ghana exit after draw with Mozambique

Ghana have been knocked out of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations for the second successive time after playing out a 2-2 draw with Mozambique in their last group game.

They sit third in Group B with two points from a possible nine.

Antoine Semenyo’s strike inside two minutes which was tipped over by Mozambican goalkeeper Ivane Urrubal spoke volume about Ghana’s intension.

The West Africans then took the lead in the 15th minute from the penalty spot after Joseph Paintsil was brought down in the 18 yard box by Nanani.

Jordan stepped up and slotted it into the right bottom corner.

Lau King and Bruno Langa had opportunities to restore parity and even put Mozambique in front but to no avail.

The Black Stars made them pay when Jordan had his second on the night from the spot after Reinildo Mandeva handled the ball in the box.

But Mozambique turned things around after Geny Catamo pulled one back from the spot in the 91st minute.

Mandeva atoned for his penalty cause with a header to bring them on levelled terms in the 94th minute.

It is now back to back grouo stage exits for the Black Stars, having been eliminated at the first round in the 2021 edition in Cameroon.
