Ipswich Town have completed the signing of Ghana World Cup winger Abdul Fatawu from Leicester City on a five-year contract running to the summer of 2031.
The 22-year-old wide forward joins for an undisclosed fee after a standout year for club and country, and will immediately link up with his new team-mates at Town’s pre-season training camp in La Manga, Spain.
Fatawu played in all four of Ghana’s matches at this summer’s FIFA World Cup in North America, including the group-stage meeting with England, and has already earned 32 senior caps, scoring three goals.
He becomes one of Ipswich’s most high-profile arrivals as the club prepare for their return to the Premier League.
‘Proud to have signed for Ipswich Town’
Speaking after completing the move, Fatawu said he had been attracted by the scale of Ipswich’s ambitions under manager Gary O’Neil.
“I am proud to have signed for Ipswich Town,” Abdul said.
“The ambition the club has is very exciting and I’m looking forward to being a part of that as we prepare for the Premier League season. After speaking to the manager (Gary O’Neil), I know what the expectation is and I’m looking forward to meeting my teammates and starting work.
“I have played against Ipswich a few times during my time in England and I know how passionate the supporters are for the club, so I’m excited to play for them and show them what I can do.”
Fatawu will now compete for a starting place in a Town side that, like Leicester, secured promotion from the Championship and is building a squad designed to withstand the step up to the top flight.
O’Neil hails ‘young player with good experience’
Ipswich boss Gary O’Neil described Fatawu as a player who combines strong physical qualities with top-level experience unusual for his age.
Town Manager Gary O’Neil said: “Abdul is a young player who has already gained good experience in the game and we’re excited to have him with us.
“He has strong physical and technical attributes, is comfortable on the ball and can test the opposition in one-on-one situations, so will provide us with good options within the squad.
“Having represented his country at the World Cup this summer, I know he is now looking forward to getting to work ahead of the Premier League season.”
Fatawu’s arrival adds to Ipswich’s attacking depth as they aim to establish themselves back in the Premier League.
From Tamale to the Premier League
Born in Tamale in northern Ghana, Fatawu started his career with local side Steadfast before earning a loan switch to Ghana Premier Division club Dreams FC in October 2021.
His performances quickly attracted interest from Europe and he joined Sporting in Portugal the following year. While in Lisbon, he made his first appearances in European competition, including the Champions League.
Leicester secured his services on loan for the 2023-24 campaign, where he played a central role in the Foxes’ Sky Bet Championship title win, achieved in the same season Ipswich clinched promotion. Fatawu’s impact was recognised with Leicester’s Young Player of the Year award.
An injury-hit 2024-25 season limited him to 11 Premier League matches, but he responded strongly in 2025-26, scoring nine goals in 44 appearances for Leicester.
Rising star on the international stage
Fatawu has been highly regarded within Ghanaian football circles since his teenage years.
He was named Player of the Tournament at the 2021 U20 Africa Cup of Nations, helping Ghana lift the trophy in March of that year. His senior international debut followed later in 2021.
The winger was part of Ghana’s squad at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where he featured once, before becoming a key figure at this summer’s tournament in North America, starting all four of the Black Stars’ games.
Ipswich will hope that the combination of World Cup pedigree, European club experience and domestic form that has marked his career so far will translate into a decisive influence in their first season back in the Premier League.
