Lyon table opening offer for Chelsea defensive target

Olympique Lyonnais have accelerated their interest in RC Lens defender Jonathan Clauss, amid reported interest from Chelsea.

The French side are keen on adding the 29 year-old to their ranks as they look to bolster their options in wide areas, and Clauss certainly fits the bill, having been one of the top defenders in Ligue 1 last season.

The Frenchman registered 5 goals and 11 assists in 37 Ligue 1 appearances as he helped Lens towards a European spot, though their exciting side ultimately came up just short.

Now, as per L’Equipe, Lyon have tabled an opening offer of 5m euros, with the potential to rise to 6m euros with add-ons. However, this was promptly rejected by their fellow Ligue 1 side, who are thought to be holding out for closer to double figures.

Chelsea in the race?

Chelsea were thought to be keen on a move for Clauss last month, but it seems as though the Blues have cooled their interest for the moment, with Cesar Azpilicueta’s future still up in the air.

Should the Spaniard depart, Thomas Tuchel may return to the deal given the lack of options at right wing-back beyond the exciting Reece James.

However, with the likes of Dujon Sterling in the academy, and a buy-back clause on Tino Livramento from next season, they could be tempted to forego Clauss and wait it out.
