Rangers yet to receive offers for Barisic

An update has emerged on Glasgow Rangers gem Borna Barisic and his future at Ibrox as the summer transfer window heads into full swing…

What’s the talk?

Gers journalist Joshua Barrie has confirmed that the club have not received a single bid or enquiry over a potential deal for the left-back at this moment in time.

He tweeted: “Understand there is nothing happening regarding Borna Barisic at present. Rangers have not had any contact or confirmed interest from other clubs. It’s not guaranteed that the Croatian definitely stays this summer, but there is no current movement.”

This comes after the Daily Record claimed that Trabzonspor are ready to step up their bid to sign the left-back, amid interest from Serie A.

Ross Wilson will be frustrated

Light Blues chief Ross Wilson will be left frustrated by this latest update, as he may be looking to offload the defender in order to fund other signings at Rangers.

Alan Nixon reported that the club could need to sell one or two players in order to complete a deal to sign Josh Tymon from Stoke, with Barisic potentially making way for the English full-back.

The Croatia international turns 30 in November and there have been some question marks over his ability in big games.

Last season, Derek Ferguson ripped into the full-back and urged Giovanni van Bronckhorst not to start him in the most recent Old Firm clash, saying: “With Barisic, he got spooked. He has one look, two looks, he has three looks. He knows he’s there. Then there comes a time, you know he’s there. Is there a panic in him? Instead of thinking there’s the ball, I’ll go and meet it, he doesn’t react.

“You can see the disappointment. (Steven) Davis is close to him and knows the danger is there and he’s going off his head at Barisic. See for me, I wouldn’t play him at Parkhead.”

On a couple of occasions against Celtic this year, Barisic switched off at the back post as he allowed Liel Abada to score, and Ferguson’s comments suggest that the left-back was unable to handle the pressure of such a big encounter.

On the other hand, Tymon is a 23-year-old defender who can come in as a long-term project for Van Bronckhorst to mould.

He played 44 times for Stoke in the Championship last season and created a whopping 14 ‘big chances’, whilst Barisic managed just three in 23 Premiership outings.

This suggests that the Potters gem can offer more of a threat going forward than the Croatian, whilst also having almost seven years on the Gers defender, which is why he would be an excellent signing.

Therefore, Wilson will be frustrated by the lack of concrete interest in Barisic and will be hoping that some bids come in for him in the next few weeks.
