Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany is expected to return to the dugout after the next international break, according to the club’s honorary president Uli Hoeness.
The Belgian coach collapsed while watching a training session involving Bayern Munich’s youth team and was taken to hospital. His assistant, Aaron Danks, has been in charge of the German club since the incident.
Hoeness told German broadcaster BR24 that Kompany could be back with the squad within two or three weeks, meaning he may resume his duties after the international break.
“He will be back with us in two or three weeks. So after the international break, he will return to the bench,” Hoeness said, in comments reported by the Spanish newspaper Sport on Sunday.
“He had been working 12 hours a day, six days a week. That was simply too much.”
The comments offered a more reassuring assessment than the update given by sporting director Max Eberl after Bayern’s victory over Mainz on Saturday.
“Vinnie [Kompany] is making good progress in his recovery,” Eberl said. “However, we still have to wait for the doctors’ green light before allowing him to return.”
If Hoeness’s prediction proves correct, Kompany could be back in the Bayern Munich dugout for their Bundesliga match against Cologne on 20 November 2026.
Bayern then face Lille in the Champions League five days later, on 25 November, before travelling to face Hamburg the following Saturday.
Danks has overseen the team during Kompany’s absence, while the club has awaited further medical guidance on the coach’s condition and a possible return to work. Although Hoeness gave a projected timeframe, Eberl’s comments indicate that the final decision remains dependent on approval from the doctors.
Kompany’s return would therefore come first in the Bundesliga fixture against Cologne, provided he receives the required medical clearance after the international break.
