Former Ghana international Anthony Baffoe has stepped down from the committee appointed to find a new head coach for the Black Stars, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has confirmed.
GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum said committee chairman Fred Pappoe reported Baffoe’s withdrawal to the association’s Executive Council (EXCO) at a meeting last Thursday.
No reason was given for the decision, although reports had previously suggested Baffoe and high-performance specialist Faisal Chibsah had both declined to serve on the panel.
Baffoe was named on the five-member committee alongside former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah, legal practitioner Agbesi Dzakpasu and Chibsah. Pappoe was appointed chairman.
Speaking on Max FM, Asante Twum said the four remaining members had continued with their work after being sworn in.
“The chairman of the search committee [Fred Pappoe] confirmed to the Executive Council that Anthony [Baffoe] was not part of the committee. This is based on the last meeting they held, which was last week, Thursday, which I was present for,” Asante Twum said.
“There was no reason given. All he said was that Tony had withdrawn. He mentioned that the four of them have been doing the job since they were sworn into office.”
The committee was formed jointly by the GFA and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation after Carlos Queiroz left his position following Ghana’s poor start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign.
Ghana lost their opening two Group C matches against Ivory Coast and The Gambia, leaving them without a point and under pressure to revive their qualification hopes. The Black Stars are seeking a place at the 2027 AFCON after failing to qualify for the 2025 tournament in Morocco.
The panel’s main task is to recommend a permanent successor to Queiroz as Ghana look to rebuild their campaign.
In the meantime, the GFA and the Sports Ministry have put in place an interim technical team led by Kim Lars Bjorkegren. Ibrahim Tanko and Godwin Attram have been appointed assistant coaches, while former Ghana goalkeeper Fatawu Dauda will work as goalkeeping coach.
That temporary coaching staff will take charge of Ghana’s November qualifying matches against Somalia as the Black Stars attempt to get their campaign back on track.
The GFA and the Sports Ministry are expected to appoint a permanent head coach before Ghana play their final round of qualifying matches next year.
