Former Berekum Chelsea midfielder William Bediako has joined Atletico Madrid on loan, with the La Liga club given the option to sign the Ghanaian permanently.
The 18-year-old moved to Spain this summer after signing for lower-tier side Trival Vald. He has now been sent on loan to Atletico Madrid, where he is expected to play for the club’s Under-19 team.
Bediako’s move is intended to give him time to settle into a new football environment while continuing his development within Atletico’s system. The club will also be able to assess his progress before deciding whether to make the transfer permanent.
The midfielder arrives in Spain having gained senior experience in the Ghana Premier League with Berekum Chelsea. He made 30 league appearances for the club across two seasons before moving to Europe.
Berekum Chelsea confirmed the transfer in a statement, welcoming the player’s move to the Spanish capital and wishing him well for the next stage of his career.
The club said: “We are excited to announce that our attacking midfielder, William Bediako, has signed for Atletico de Madrid.
“Everyone at the club wishes William Bediako all the very best.”
Bediako is primarily described as a defensive midfielder, although Berekum Chelsea referred to him as an attacking midfielder in its announcement.
His initial assignment with Atletico’s Under-19 side is expected to help him adjust to the club’s structure and the demands of football in Spain. The loan also provides an opportunity to build on the experience he gained during his time in Ghana’s top flight.
The move represents a significant step for Bediako, who has progressed from the Ghana Premier League into the development set-up of one of Spain’s prominent clubs at the age of 18.
His two seasons with Berekum Chelsea, including 30 league appearances, form the basis of his first challenge in European football. Trival Vald arranged the loan following his summer move to the Spanish side.
Bediako will now focus on adapting to his surroundings and making progress with Atletico’s youth team as he begins the next phase of his career.
