The Ghana Football Association (GFA) expects to appoint a permanent Black Stars head coach by November 2026, following the departure of Carlos Queiroz.
GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum says the committee responsible for identifying Queiroz’s successor should complete its work around the time Ghana finish their two Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying matches against Somalia next month.
Kim Lars Bjorkegren, head coach of the Black Queens, has been placed in temporary charge of the senior men’s national team for those fixtures.
The five-member selection committee recommended Bjorkegren for the interim position. He will be assisted by Ibrahim Tanko and Godwin Attram, while former Black Stars goalkeeper Fatawu Dauda will retain his role as goalkeepers’ trainer.
Speaking to Luv FM, Asante Twum said the GFA expected the coaching situation to become clearer once the Somalia matches had been completed.
“They [the committee] want to get us a coach by November. In terms of actuals, I don’t have, but I know by the end of the two games against Somalia, they will be in a position to tell who our coach is,” he said.
Despite the timetable for the appointment, Asante Twum said the association’s immediate concern was Ghana’s poor start to their AFCON qualifying campaign.
“The two games ahead of us are more important than any other subject. We need to get back on track and must get results in the next matches,” he added.
The Black Stars are bottom of Group C without a point after losing their first two qualifying games against Ivory Coast and The Gambia.
Ghana are expected to play both matches against Somalia on home soil and will be seeking maximum points from the back-to-back fixtures.
The four-time African champions failed to qualify for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco after finishing bottom of their qualifying group. They now face pressure to prevent another absence from the continental competition.
The search for a permanent successor to Queiroz will continue while Bjorkegren prepares the team for the Somalia games. Those matches will give the interim coach and his technical staff an immediate chance to revive Ghana’s qualification campaign.
The GFA’s planned November 2026 deadline means the association could have greater clarity over the long-term leadership of the Black Stars by the conclusion of the fixtures, although the current priority remains securing results and improving Ghana’s position in Group C.
