Tottenham Hotspur manager Roberto De Zerbi praised Mohammed Kudus after the Ghana international helped his side beat Coventry City 3-1 to secure their first Premier League victory of the season.
Kudus created James Maddison’s opening goal as Tottenham took all three points against the newly promoted team on Monday night.
Playing in an unfamiliar position, the former West Ham United player showed his ability to contribute in different attacking roles and helped Spurs take control of the match.
De Zerbi was particularly encouraged by Kudus’ display after half-time, when he felt Tottenham were better able to find space and threaten in the final third.
“Kudus also, I liked his performance, and especially in the second half, because in the first half I think it was too difficult to find the space,” he added.
The performance was another positive step for Kudus as he continues his return from a lengthy injury absence. The Coventry match was only his second start since January, making his involvement in the team a significant stage in his recovery.
Although his time on the sidelines interrupted his progress, Kudus has already made an impact for Tottenham this season. He has played in six Premier League matches and has provided two assists.
His latest contribution highlighted both his creativity and his capacity to adapt to the tactical demands of De Zerbi’s team. Kudus is primarily regarded as an attacking midfielder, but his performance in a less familiar role demonstrated the range of options he can offer.
His pass for Maddison’s opener was especially important as Tottenham looked to secure their first league win of the campaign. The eventual 3-1 result gave De Zerbi a welcome outcome as he continues to develop the side’s performances.
For Kudus, the match provided an opportunity to build fitness, regain consistency and strengthen his position within the squad after his extended absence.
His versatility could become increasingly valuable during the Premier League season. The ability to create chances and operate in several attacking positions gives De Zerbi another option when deciding on his starting line-up.
The manager’s comments also indicated that he was encouraged by Kudus’ improvement following the interval, despite the difficulties Tottenham experienced in finding space during the first half.
With two assists from six league appearances, Kudus will now aim to maintain his fitness and establish a regular run of games as he seeks to make a greater contribution to Tottenham’s campaign.
The victory moved Spurs to their first league success of the season, while Kudus’ assist and De Zerbi’s assessment offered further encouragement over the Ghanaian’s return to action.
