Ghana midfielder Kwasi Sibo has completed a move to Libyan champions Al-Swehly after leaving Real Oviedo as a free agent.
The 28-year-old has signed a three-year contract with Al-Swehly, with the agreement containing an option to extend his stay for an additional season. The Libyan club confirmed the signing in a video unveiling Sibo as their latest arrival.
Sibo’s transfer comes after a proposed move to Turkish Super Lig club Genclerbirligi fell through. That allowed Al-Swehly to secure the Ghana international and add an experienced player to their squad.
Reports indicate that the deal is worth about $10m. The package is also reported to be part of a wider Libyan government-backed initiative aimed at attracting established African players to the country’s top flight.
Sibo joins Al-Swehly after featuring prominently for Ghana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The midfielder appeared in all four of the Black Stars’ matches during the tournament and accumulated 249 minutes of playing time.
He started Ghana’s goalless draw with England and also played against Panama, Croatia and Colombia. His performances at the World Cup helped maintain his profile as he considered his next club move following his departure from Real Oviedo.
The switch to Al-Swehly is expected to place Sibo at the centre of the club’s plans for continental competition. The Libyan champions are preparing for a CAF Champions League preliminary-round tie against Zanzibar-based KVZ.
Al-Swehly will hope the Ghanaian midfielder can strengthen their challenge as they seek to make an impact in the competition. His arrival gives the club a player with recent international tournament experience ahead of their campaign.
For Sibo, the move provides a new opportunity after the collapse of the Genclerbirligi transfer. He will now continue his career in Libya on a contract running for at least three years, with the possibility of remaining at Al-Swehly for a fourth season.
The midfielder’s arrival also forms part of an increasingly ambitious recruitment strategy in Libyan football, with the reported $10m package linked to efforts supported by the Libyan government to bring recognised African talent into the domestic league.
His immediate focus will be Al-Swehly’s CAF Champions League assignment against KVZ of Zanzibar, where the club will begin its attempt to progress beyond the preliminary round and establish itself on the African stage.
