Emiliano Martinez set to stay at Aston Villa as Juventus switch goalkeeper targets

Emiliano Martinez will not join Juventus this summer after talks between the Italian club and Aston Villa failed to result in a transfer for the Argentina goalkeeper.

Juventus had made a fresh approach for the 33-year-old, with negotiations helping to narrow the difference between the two clubs over the fee. Martinez’s personal terms were not considered an obstacle during the discussions.

However, Juventus have now decided not to pursue the deal and will turn their attention to other goalkeeper targets.

The development comes as Aston Villa move closer to an agreement for Parma goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, who has been identified by the club as their preferred option for the 2026-27 season.

Villa have accelerated negotiations to complete a deal for Suzuki while continuing to consider Martinez’s future. The Japan international is expected to join the Premier League club regardless of what happens with Martinez.

Martinez signed a new five-year contract with Aston Villa in 2024 but was also strongly linked with a move away from the club last summer.

Manchester United held talks with the goalkeeper and made an offer to sign him on loan during the final stages of the transfer window. That proposal was rejected.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future, Martinez remained a key player for Aston Villa last season. He made 44 appearances as Unai Emery’s side finished fourth in the Premier League and won the Europa League.

Martinez was also one of Argentina’s leading performers at the World Cup this summer. He started every match for his country before Argentina were beaten by Spain in the final.

The goalkeeper has made 256 appearances for Aston Villa since joining from Arsenal in September 2020.

Should Martinez leave, his departure would form part of a significant period of change at Villa Park. Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans and Lucas Digne have already left the club this summer.

Aston Villa’s decision to pursue Suzuki indicates that the club are preparing for a possible change in goal, although the Japanese goalkeeper’s arrival is not dependent on Martinez’s eventual destination. Juventus, meanwhile, must now identify an alternative to the player who has established himself as one of the most prominent goalkeepers in international football.

The collapse of the proposed move means Martinez is currently set to remain at Aston Villa, despite the latest round of talks with Juventus and the renewed speculation over his position at the club.
