Ghana’s Black Satellites have been knocked out of the 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship after being held to a 0-0 draw by Togo in their final Group B match at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium in Yamoussoukro, Cote d’Ivoire, on Sunday.

The result ended Ghana’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals. Maxwell Konadu’s side needed victory to keep their campaign alive, but they could not find the goal required despite producing one of their strongest performances of the tournament.

Ghana controlled significant periods of the match and created the clearer chances, with the team showing greater attacking intent as they searched for a breakthrough. They appeared to have taken the lead at one stage, only for the effort to be ruled out.

The goalless draw leaves the Black Satellites third in Group B on two points from three matches. Their campaign began with a defeat by Nigeria, before they earned a spirited draw against Burkina Faso and finished with Sunday’s stalemate against Togo.

Although Ghana failed to advance from the group stage, the team’s performances provided several positive indications for the future. The players displayed resilience and character throughout the competition, while also showing a willingness to attack against some of the strongest youth sides in West Africa.

The tournament also gave head coach Maxwell Konadu the opportunity to assess his squad in competitive circumstances. Several players were given valuable playing time as they continued their efforts to establish themselves within the team and press their claims for future assignments.

Ghana already have a place secured at the 2027 TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations because they will host the tournament. As a result, the WAFU B U-20 Championship represented an important stage in the country’s preparations for that continental competition.

The experience in Cote d’Ivoire has helped strengthen team cohesion and exposed the squad to the demands of high-level international youth football. It has also given the technical team lessons to consider as preparations continue for next year’s tournament on home soil.

The Black Satellites’ campaign ended sooner than expected, but the matches are expected to contribute to the development of a side capable of challenging for continental honours in 2027.

For Konadu and his players, the focus will now turn to using the lessons from the WAFU B championship to build a more competitive squad ahead of Ghana’s role as hosts of Africa’s premier youth football tournament.

The Ghana Football Association’s communications department said the competition had provided players with valuable exposure and a foundation for the team’s longer-term development.
