Ghana have been awarded the men’s 4x100m relay bronze medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow after Canada and South Africa were disqualified following a post-race video review.
The Ghanaian team initially finished fourth in the final, behind Australia, Canada and Nigeria. However, officials subsequently reviewed the race footage and ruled that Canada and South Africa had committed infringements during their baton exchanges.
Both teams were removed from the official results, changing the medal positions and lifting Ghana onto the podium.
Nigeria were promoted to the silver medal position, while Ghana moved up from fourth to third. The result gives Team Ghana its only athletics medal of the Glasgow Games and adds another medal to the country’s overall tally.
Ghana’s quartet consisted of Benjamin Azamati, Joseph Paul Amoah, Abdul Rasheed Saminu and their fourth, unnamed teammate. Although they did not initially finish in a medal position, their performance was rewarded after the post-race review altered the final standings.
The decision came after officials examined the baton exchanges involving Canada and South Africa. In the 4x100m relay, teams must complete each exchange within the designated takeover area, and any infringement can lead to disqualification. In this case, the review led to both Canada and South Africa being removed from the results.
That ruling transformed the outcome for Ghana, whose disciplined showing in a closely fought final was enough to secure a medal once the disqualifications had been confirmed.
The bronze represents a significant achievement for Ghanaian athletics at the Glasgow Games. It also provides a notable conclusion to the country’s track and field campaign, with the relay team’s persistence ultimately rewarded after the race itself had ended.
Australia remained ahead of the revised field, while Nigeria’s promotion to silver and Ghana’s move into bronze completed the updated medal places. The changes underline the importance of post-race officiating in relay events, where the outcome can depend not only on the order in which teams cross the line but also on the legality of every baton exchange.
