Ghana’s Sports and Recreation Minister, Kofi Iddie Adams, has promised the Black Queens the full backing of the government and the country as they begin their TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2026 campaign against Cape Verde.
On the eve of Wednesday’s Group C opener in Morocco, Hon. Adams visited the squad at their training base for a morale-boosting address ahead of the match at Moulay Rachid Stadium.
Speaking to players and technical staff, he said he had come on behalf of the Executive, Parliament and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation to convey their collective support for the team as they target continental glory.
“I bring you warm greetings and the unwavering support of the Executive and Parliament. The whole nation is behind you, believing in your talent and your ability to make Ghana proud,” he told the squad.
‘Play with courage and for millions back home’
Hon. Adams urged the Black Queens to approach every fixture in the tournament with conviction and a strong sense of purpose, stressing that they represent the hopes of Ghanaians everywhere.
“When you step onto that pitch, play with courage, play for one another and play for the millions of Ghanaians who believe in you. Leave everything on the field and let your performances speak for the nation,” he said.
The Minister challenged the players to seize what he described as a rare opportunity to etch their names into Ghana’s football story and to use the stage to inspire others.
“This tournament is your stage to inspire a generation. You have been here before last year and you performed. We are back to do it again and even better than last year. Go out there, compete fearlessly and show Africa the true spirit of the Black Queens.”
Confidence in preparations
Hon. Adams also praised the professionalism and dedication shown by both the players and backroom staff during their build-up to the tournament, adding that he was convinced their work in training would be reflected in their performances.
He commended the attitude of the squad throughout their preparations and expressed belief that their efforts would yield positive results once the competition gets under way.
The Black Queens face Cape Verde on Wednesday, 29 July, as they open their WAFCON 2026 campaign at Moulay Rachid Stadium, with government and football authorities insisting they have the full backing of the nation as they aim for success on the continental stage.
