Minister for Sports and Recreation , Kofi Adams, has voiced disappointment with Black Stars head coach Otto Addo, insisting Ghana must raise their level to guarantee qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
His comments follow the Stars’ mixed results in the recent qualifiers ; a 1-1 draw against Chad in N’Djamena and a narrow 1-0 win over Mali in Accra. Ghana also failed to book a place at the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show, Adams described the performances as unconvincing despite Monday’s victory over Mali.
“Very soon, AFCON is going to start in Morocco. Are we going to be part of it? No, we will watch on TV. We have not even qualified for the World Cup yet. We still need a win and at least a draw to comfortably say that, as far as our group is concerned, nobody can overtake us,” he said.
The Minister further expressed frustration with Otto Addo’s work so far.
“If I tell you I am impressed, then it means I do not know my job. I am not. There is a lot of room for improvement. Even when you meet the coach himself, he admits that he got things wrong and takes responsibility. But the question is: for how long will you continue to take blame for wrong decisions?” he questioned.
Ghana currently lead Group I with 19 points after eight matches, trailed by Madagascar (16), Comoros (15), and Mali (12). Central African Republic (5) and Chad (1) complete the table.
The Black Stars return in October for their final two qualifiers ; an away trip to the Central African Republic before hosting Comoros in Accra needing at least four points to seal their ticket to the USA, Mexico, and Canada.
