Asante Kotoko head coach Abdul Karim Zito has expressed pride and delight after guiding the club to their ninth President’s Cup title, describing the victory over Hearts of Oak as a personal milestone.
The Porcupine Warriors came from behind to beat their eternal rivals 2-1 in a pulsating clash at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday, earning Zito his second trophy with the club.
“It feels great. This is my second trophy, and I’m very happy. We couldn’t win the league, so the focus was on getting this one,” Zito said in a post-match interview.
Hearts took the lead in the first half through striker Hamza Issah, who capitalised on a goalkeeping error from Camara Mohammed. But Kotoko turned the game around in the second half.
An own goal from Konadu Yiadom, followed almost immediately by a Kwame Adom finish, flipped the result in Kotoko’s favour as they held on to lift the trophy in front of a lively crowd.
Zito praised his team’s second-half response and confirmed that the win serves as a major boost ahead of their preparations for continental football.
“Our second half was much better. I’m happy for the players and supporters. We’ll now shift our focus to the Toyota Cup in South Africa and our CAF Confederation Cup campaign,” he added.
Kotoko will travel to Johannesburg later this month to face Kaizer Chiefs in the Toyota Cup.
