Ghana defender Gideon Mensah will rejoin RB Salzburg following Bordeaux’s relegation from the French Ligue 1.
Mensah joined Bordeaux on loan with the option of a permanent deal, but due to their relegation, Bordeaux are unwilling to exercise that option.
Mensah will thus return to Salzburg, where he is under contract until 2024.
The 23-year-old could be loaned out to another top-flight club to keep him active before the 2022 FIFA World Cup in November.
Mensah played 23 matches and contributed two assists but it wasn’t enough Bordeaux finished bottom.
He has been with Salzburg since 2019, after joining them from Liefering in Austria. However, he has spent the last three seasons on loan.
Mensah first went on loan to Belgian side Zulte Waregem, then moved to Vitória S.C. in Portugal before joining Bordeaux in France.
