Premier League midweek preview

After an exciting set of weekend matches, the Premier League returns to midweek action with crucial points to be gained as the fights for the title, European places and survival continue.

We preview the midweek fixtures below as the season reaches the business end.

Liverpool v Fulham – Wednesday 20:00

Unbeaten in six, Liverpool are one of the most in-form sides in the Premier League at the moment with the Reds looking more recognisable after what has been an uncharacteristically poor season. A Champions League space is not completely out of the question for Jurgen Klopp’s side as they sit seven points behind Manchester United with five matches left to play. To be in contention for the top four, Liverpool’s strong form will have to continue, and it looks set to as they head into Wednesday’s match 2/9 favourites for the win.

After what would be considered a very successful season at Craven Cottage, Fulham have appeared to run out of steam towards the end of the season with just two wins in their last nine games, but with survival a certainty, Marco Silva’s men will not be too concerned. Fulham put up a good fight in their last match against Manchester City but heading into this match as 10/1 underdogs they look unlikely to cause Liverpool any problems.

When Liverpool play it is rarely a quiet game. The Reds have played seven league matches in April, with a total of 31 goals being scored. Over 2.5 match goals does not look unlikely at 4/9 and with three of Liverpool last four games having five or more goals, over 4.5 match goals looks an intriguing punt at 12/5.

Manchester City v West Ham – Wednesday 20:00

Manchester City look set to win their fifth title in six seasons having won all of their last eight league games, with contenders Arsenal faltering at the final stage. City now lead the Premier League by one point with a game in hand over Arsenal in second, so a win in this match would make the title firmly theirs to lose. Guardiola’s men look simply unstoppable at the moment and as the 1/6 favourites heading into this match they are expected to continue their stellar form.

West Ham looked to have escaped the relegation dog fight just a matter of weeks ago but with two losses in their last two matches they are looking back over their shoulder at the drop zone. The Irons don’t have the easiest of run-ins and going into this match at 14/1 it seems unlikely that their bid to redress their current form will be successful.

Manchester have been ruthless in attack this season and Erling Haaland’s scoring form has epitomised that. Haaland’s next goal would see him break the record for goals in a single Premier League season and at 3/10 there is every chance it could come on Wednesday night. The Norwegian scored a brace in the reverse fixture and is 7/4 to put West Ham to the sword again with two or more goals.

Brighton v Manchester United – Thursday 20:00

Brighton have been the surprise package of this season with very few expecting them to be fighting for a Europa League place. The Seagulls are just two points off of a Europa League spot with three games in hand over Tottenham, who sit in sixth. Roberto De Zerbi’s men put six past Wolves in their last match, even without star players Kaoru Mitoma and Alexis Mac Allister. Brighton will have an extra motivation as they hope to avenge their FA Cup semi-final loss to Manchester United and are favourites at Evens to take all three points on Thursday night.

Manchester United have had an up and down season but still have a top four spot in their grasp. A win for Erik ten Hag’s men over eighth-place Brighton would all but secure Champions League football next season, which would have been their target at the start of the campaign. United are 12/5 underdogs to beat Brighton and having failed to win in 90 minutes against the Seagulls on two occasions already this season it will certainly be a tough test.

Manchester United have scored just once in their two matches against Brighton this season and if they are to find the back of the net they will likely look to their top scorer Marcus Rashford who is 8/5 favourite to score at any time.
