March 17 date for final funeral rites of Christian Atsu

The Twasam family has announced Friday, March 17, 2023, as the date for the burial and final funeral rites of beloved Ghanaian footballer Christian Atsu.

The forecourt of State House in Ghana’s capital Accra will serve as the venue where the public will be able to pay tribute and say goodbye to the player who once featured for FC Porto, Chelsea, Vitesse Arnhem Everton and Newcastle United.

Per popular Ghanaian tradition, the date was announced during the One-Week Observance of the tragic passing of the ex-Black Stars winger at Adjiringanor on Saturday, March 4.

Atsu had been playing in Turkey for Hatayspor since last summer but met his untimely death in an earthquake that occurred on February 6. He was officially confirmed as one of the victims of the dreadful incident 12 days later – Saturday, February 18.

The body of the footballer, 31, was returned to his native Ghana the following day.

Christian Atsu had 65 caps with the Ghana senior national team. He helped the Black Stars reach the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) final. Atsu was named player of the tournament.
