Sunderland claimed a 1-0 home win over Chelsea on Sunday, 21 November 2026, after a controversial penalty decided the Premier League match.
Chelsea remain fifth in the table with 16 points, while Sunderland moved up to 18th on eight points.
The decisive moment came in the 36th minute when Le Fee converted from the spot. Referee Jared Gillett awarded the penalty after ruling that Levi Colwill had pulled down Brian Brobbey, although both players appeared to be involved in a physical tussle as Brobbey advanced towards goal.
The result was Sunderland’s second Premier League victory of the season and their sixth win in all competitions. It also provided an important lift for manager Regis Le Bris, whose side had been under pressure.
Sunderland had not won in the league since beating Fulham 1-0 at home in the second round of the season. The Black Cats produced a strong display against Chelsea and held on to secure their first league victory since that result.
Chelsea, meanwhile, have now lost two of their past three Premier League matches.
Brobbey was particularly influential for Sunderland before being forced off in the 77th minute. He came close to opening the scoring early on when he met a cross from Chemsdine Talbi with a header that went narrowly wide.
Sunderland became increasingly defensive after Brobbey’s substitution, but Chelsea rarely created a serious threat as the hosts protected their narrow lead.
Le Bris will nevertheless be concerned about the fitness of two important players. Granit Xhaka and Brobbey both left the pitch with muscle injuries.
The victory leaves Sunderland with renewed momentum, although their position in 18th means they remain in the relegation places. Chelsea were unable to respond after the disputed penalty and suffered another setback in their league campaign.
