Barcelona are moving towards a new interpretation of the full-back position, with players who possess the instincts and technical qualities of midfielders being favoured under Hansi Flick.
The shift, reported by Catalan newspaper Sport, reflects the possession-based philosophy established by Johan Cruyff and developed by Pep Guardiola. Rather than remaining close to the touchline, full-backs are increasingly expected to move into midfield, support build-up play and create numerical advantages.
Xavi Espart and Brian Farinas have emerged as examples of that approach after moving from midfield into defensive roles. Farinas made a strong impression on his first-team debut, recording a pass-completion rate of 97.5% against Alaves and 93.6% against Aston Villa.
He also demonstrated an ability to help construct attacks and maintain connections with team-mates in the attacking third, qualities that fit the demands of Barcelona’s evolving system.
Kounde and Balde face uncertainty
Flick is understood to be impressed by the abilities of Espart and Farinas, as well as Joao Cancelo and Eric Garcia. Garcia, in particular, offers tactical flexibility, with his reading of the game allowing him to operate in more than one position, including midfield.
The change in emphasis could have consequences for Jules Kounde and Alejandro Balde, whose qualities may be less suited to the responsibilities now being placed on Barcelona’s full-backs.
Kounde has remained a consistent performer for France, but the report says he has found it difficult to meet the attacking demands Flick requires from the position.
Balde’s circumstances are different. His pace and ability to beat opponents previously made him particularly effective, but his impact has been affected by the alteration in Barcelona’s style.
The left-back benefited when Raphinha moved inside, creating space for Balde to attack. However, Flick’s use of wide forwards such as Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi has reduced those spaces, while Balde is now being asked to move into central areas more frequently.
According to the report, suitable offers during the winter transfer window could create the possibility of either Kounde or Balde leaving Barcelona as the team continues its tactical transformation.
Barcelona would still need both players because of the pressure created by the number of matches, meaning any departure would depend on the nature of an offer and the club’s ability to manage its squad.
