Giving evidence to Parliament’s Select Committee on Youth and Sports, the GFA president questioned the reason for imposing import duties on equipment intended for national teams.
He recalled an incident before Ghana’s match against South Africa in Cape Coast when the association had to send its Director of National Teams to the port to secure 30 pieces of playing kit.
The intervention was necessary to ensure the Black Stars had the equipment required to play the match, Okraku said.
He also challenged the 17.5% Value Added Tax (VAT) charged on football tickets, arguing that clubs face a greater tax burden than other providers in the entertainment sector.
Okraku called for a review of the current tax regime, saying the costs place additional pressure on football clubs and the GFA.
According to the GFA president, the financial demands make it more difficult for clubs and the association to run their operations and support the development of football.
He said both the treatment of imported national team equipment and the tax charged on match tickets should be reconsidered as part of efforts to reduce the burden on the sport.
