Bechem United president Kingsley Owusu Achau says he would rather watch El Clasico than a Ghana Premier League match if the two games were being played at the same time.
The football administrator has questioned the domestic competition’s ability to attract and retain supporters, arguing that the league is not currently offering enough excitement to compete with high-profile European fixtures.
Speaking to Hot FM, Owusu Achau said the quality and entertainment associated with major matches in Europe made them a more attractive choice for many fans.
His comments add to an ongoing debate over the Ghana Premier League’s appeal at a time when supporters can readily watch games involving Europe’s leading clubs. The accessibility of those competitions has increased the challenge facing Ghana’s top flight as it seeks to draw attention and regular crowds.
The Bechem United president’s view also comes against a backdrop of wider concerns surrounding the domestic league. Although Ghana has considerable football talent, attendances have declined and clubs continue to face questions over fixture scheduling, the consistency of officiating and the quality of the overall matchday experience.
Those issues have made it harder for teams to bring supporters into stadiums on a regular basis. Owusu Achau’s remarks are expected to renew discussion about the steps required to improve the league’s image and make matches a more compelling proposition for fans.
Responsibility for that improvement would involve a number of stakeholders, including the Ghana Football Association, the clubs and sponsors. The debate centres on how those groups can help strengthen the competition’s appeal and encourage greater interest in domestic fixtures.
Owusu Achau’s comments were focused on the wider state of the league, but Bechem United will return to action this weekend as they seek to make progress on the pitch.
The club will host FC Samartex at Nana Gyeabour Park in Matchday 10 of the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League. The Hunters will be aiming to claim all three points in front of their home supporters.
The fixture gives Bechem United an immediate opportunity to shift attention from the debate surrounding the league’s attractiveness to their own campaign, with the club looking to take advantage of home support.
