Barcelona have been impressed by Hamza Abdelkarim’s professionalism, humility and willingness to accept opportunities with either the first team or Barcelona Atletic when required, according to Catalan newspaper Sport.
The 18-year-old Egypt forward has handled a difficult situation with maturity, despite gaining considerable recognition in his home country after appearing at the World Cup.
“It is not easy for a player of this age to deal with a similar situation, especially as the Egypt striker has become widely known in his country after taking part in the World Cup,” Sport reported.
“However, Hamza has shown great humility and awareness, both in accepting his limited appearances with the first team and in being ready to play for Barcelona Atletic under Juliano Belletti whenever he is asked.”
Abdelkarim took part in Barcelona’s training session on Wednesday as the squad returned to work following painful defeats by Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid. He watched both matches from the substitutes’ bench without making an appearance.
His most recent outing came on 17 October, when he played his only match so far for Barcelona Atletic. He scored his side’s opening goal from the penalty spot against Utebo in a 2-1 victory at the Johan Cruyff Stadium.
After extending his contract until 2030, Abdelkarim said his priority was to secure playing time, regardless of whether that chance came with the senior side or the reserve team. He stressed that he did not want to put himself in an embarrassing position.
That approach reflects a player who values opportunities to play and develop above status, according to the report. He also understands that regular matches will help him adapt more quickly to Barcelona’s style, which differs from the football he experienced before moving to Catalonia.
Fabregas? No, Fa? Need keep manager Hans Flick
Barcelona’s appreciation of Abdelkarim extends beyond his footballing ability. He has also settled smoothly into the first-team dressing room.
Although he hopes to compete for a place alongside some of the world’s best players, he remains modest and avoids arrogance. The forward joins his team-mates in moments of humour and relaxation despite being quiet and naturally shy.
He maintains the same attitude when he links up with the reserve team and does not behave as though he is above his team-mates or his role within the group.
Head coach Hansi Flick is satisfied with Abdelkarim’s conduct in the dressing room and his work in training. However, the German currently favours other, more established options in attack.
