Former Hearts of Oak striker Bernard Arthur says the club’s players should be receiving more call-ups to Ghana’s national teams.
Arthur believes Hearts of Oak have several players capable of making a significant contribution at international level, rather than being considered only for the senior Black Stars.
The Phobians have made an impressive start to the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season, taking 17 points from their opening eight matches to move into second place in the standings.
That form has strengthened Arthur’s view that more of the club’s players should be involved with Ghana. The 29-year-old, who has also played for Liberty Professionals and Azam FC, said Hearts of Oak’s growing influence in the domestic game should be reflected across the country’s national teams.
Speaking to Koforidua-based Swiit FM, Arthur said he was disappointed by the limited number of Hearts of Oak players currently receiving international recognition. Goalkeeper Benjamin Asare is the main exception.
“For some time now, I have been following Hearts of Oak and the Ghana Premier League as a whole, and I have seen a lot of talent, particularly in the Hearts of Oak team,” he said.
“They are currently second in the league standings, and we are talking about one of the biggest clubs in Africa. Yet, none of their players are in the various national teams, with the exception of Benjamin Asare. I do not think that speaks well of the situation.
“Their players should be dominating the national teams, not just the Black Stars. I believe that would also boost their confidence and motivate them to do more.”
Arthur’s comments come as Hearts of Oak continue to challenge near the top of the Ghana Premier League after eight games.
He said the club’s squad contained enough quality to supply players to Ghana’s different national teams, and argued that selection would provide additional motivation for those performing well at domestic level.
