Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama has called on the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to award Ethiopia the hosting rights for the 2028 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Mahama made the appeal during a visit that also gave leaders an opportunity to assess a sporting facility as Ethiopia works to strengthen its case to host the continent’s leading football tournament.
Ethiopia’s bid comes as the country seeks to build on its rich football history while improving the infrastructure needed to stage a major international competition.
Hosting the 2028 AFCON would be a significant milestone for Ethiopia. The tournament is one of Africa’s biggest sporting events, attracting millions of fans and bringing together the continent’s leading national teams.
Mahama’s support also underlines the importance of giving more African countries the opportunity to stage major sporting events and using those occasions to advance football development across the continent.
The final decision, however, rests with CAF. The governing body will assess which countries can satisfy the competition’s organisational, infrastructural and logistical requirements before selecting the host nation.
Ethiopia will hope its preparations and sporting facilities help secure the rights as planning for future editions of the Africa Cup of Nations continues.
