Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has emerged as a potential candidate to become the next president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), with incumbent Kurt Okraku reportedly unlikely to seek a third term.
Gyan, Ghana’s all-time leading goalscorer, has not formally announced his intention to contest the election. However, uncertainty over Okraku’s future has prompted speculation that the former Sunderland and Al Ain striker could enter the race for the GFA’s top position.
The GFA amended its statutes and constitution at the 2025 Congress at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram. The changes increased the presidential term limit from two four-year terms to three.
That amendment had led to expectations that Okraku, who is also the second vice-president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), would pursue another term in office.
But his administration has faced growing scrutiny following Ghana’s disappointing start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign. The Black Stars also failed to qualify for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, missing the tournament for the first time in more than two decades.
Gyan has held a number of positions under Okraku’s administration and currently works as an ambassador for Ghana’s national teams. He remains Ghana’s record goalscorer and is Africa’s leading scorer at the FIFA World Cup.
Several other figures have already been associated with the presidential contest.
Football administrator Samuel Annim Addo, who has served on the GFA Executive Council, is involved in club football and manages Gyan. Former Brong Ahafo Regional Football Association chairman Ralph Gyambrah is also expected to bring experience from regional football administration.
Elloeny Amande, the chief executive of Karela United, has previously stood unsuccessfully for a place on the GFA Executive Council. Former Black Stars captain Andre Ayew is another name linked with the election.
Ayew was part of Ghana’s team that won the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup and went on to enjoy a lengthy club and international career. He is currently chief executive officer of Nania FC.
A former GFA vice-president is also expected to join the contest, potentially creating an increasingly competitive field of candidates.
It remains unclear whether Gyan, who represented Ghana at several World Cups and AFCON tournaments, will formally enter the election. Prospective candidates are beginning to position themselves ahead of the vote.
The GFA has not yet announced the official timetable or nomination process for the presidential election.
