Former Ghana international Samuel Inkoom has called on the current Black Stars squad to show greater commitment after their difficult start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
Ghana opened Group C with a 2-0 defeat by neighbours Ivory Coast in Bouake before suffering another damaging loss against The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The Black Stars had taken a two-goal lead in that match but allowed The Gambia to recover and secure victory, leaving Ghana bottom of the group after back-to-back defeats.
The results have increased concerns over Ghana’s chances of reaching the 2027 tournament, particularly after the team failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Speaking to Obaapa Radio, Inkoom, who previously played for Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak, questioned the level of unity and commitment within the current squad.
“In my opinion, the team spirit is not there, to be very honest,” he said. “You can see individual brilliance, but playing as a team remains the main problem.”
The former defender acknowledged that injuries affected Ghana’s preparations for their matches against Ivory Coast and The Gambia, but said the squad should still have enough quality to compete.
“Injuries disrupted the team’s preparations for the games against Ivory Coast and The Gambia, but that should not be an excuse because, at the end of the day, we have a lot of players playing week in, week out,” he added.
Inkoom urged the players to put the national team ahead of individual concerns and contribute fully to Ghana’s cause.
“I would plead with the current squad to serve the country wholeheartedly. They should serve the nation well and earn the blessings that come with it,” he said.
The Black Stars are due to resume their qualifying campaign next month and are expected to face Somalia in a double-header.
