Hearts of Oak moved to the top of the Ghana Premier League after Martin Karkari’s outstanding finish secured a 1-0 victory over Basake Holy Stars at the University of Ghana Stadium on Friday.
The result gave the Phobians a third successive win under head coach Nebojsa Kapor and strengthened their position as early title contenders after eight matches.
Hearts had entered the match on the back of victories over Vision FC and FC Port City and were determined to maintain their momentum. They controlled much of the contest, created the clearer chances and finished with 17 shots 10 more than their opponents.
Basake Holy Stars defended resolutely throughout and were prepared to absorb pressure, while also looking for opportunities to threaten on the counter-attack.
The hosts came close to breaking the deadlock when Ransford Mensah’s powerful free-kick struck the post. Hearts continued to press for a breakthrough, but Holy Stars’ defensive organisation kept the score level for long periods.
Karkari eventually produced the decisive moment. The attacking midfielder received possession, used a couple of clever shimmies to make room for himself and then sent a superb volley beyond the goalkeeper.
The goal was enough to settle a tightly contested game and earn Hearts all three points. It also extended their winning run to three matches, with the team keeping a clean sheet in each of those victories.
Kapor’s influence has continued to win praise from the Hearts faithful as the side builds momentum at the start of the campaign. Friday’s victory leaves the club at the summit and puts further pressure on their title rivals.
For Basake Holy Stars, the defeat continued a difficult sequence away from home. Although they showed resilience against a Hearts side that dominated possession and chances, they were unable to turn their defensive performance into a positive result.
Their contrasting home and away records remain a concern. Holy Stars have won 100% of their matches at home this season, but have lost every game they have played away.
Hearts will next face Debibi United as they look to extend their winning streak and retain top spot in the league.
Basake Holy Stars will attempt to respond when they host Dreams FC. They will be aiming to preserve their impressive home record while improving their overall position in the table.
