Vinicius Junior’s difficult spell at Real Madrid deepened against Leipzig, where the Brazil forward failed to attempt a single dribble in a performance described as the lowest point of his Madrid career.
According to Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, Vinicius looked short of confidence and lacking the energy that previously made him one of Europe’s most dangerous players. His attacking contribution was limited to two shots, both saved by Leipzig goalkeeper Martin Vandevoordt, and a part in the move that led to Arda Guler’s goal for a 2-0 lead.
Those moments represented the extent of Vinicius’ influence on the match.
His demeanour, movement and body language have raised concern within Real Madrid, with the club understood to be worried that he no longer appears to be enjoying his football. That is especially significant after Madrid renewed his contract this summer and placed him among the club’s leading figures, in a role close to that of Kylian Mbappe as part of its long-term project.
For now, however, Vinicius appears to be a long way from that status.
Diomande takes his chance
Vinicius was replaced in the 70th minute, with the manager sending on Ivorian forward Diomande. The substitute made an immediate impact, setting up Mbappe for Real Madrid’s third goal before scoring the fourth himself with an impressive finish.
His performance quickly made him a new favourite among supporters at the Bernabeu, while questions were asked about the decision to remove Vinicius.
The forward will not play for Real Madrid again until 4 November, when the club return to Champions League action. He is serving a four-match La Liga suspension and will not make his next domestic appearance until 21 November against Celta Vigo.
The manager defended the substitution, saying: “This change was not made by a coach who is dissatisfied. It was made by a coach who has a strong bench.”
Bernabeu reaction adds to pressure
Vinicius has continued to face jeers from sections of the Bernabeu crowd this season, and the Leipzig match was no exception. The contrast with the reception given to Diomande was particularly stark.
After being substituted, Vinicius sat on the bench with a visibly unhappy expression and a serious look. He was also the first Real Madrid player to leave for the dressing room when the final whistle was blown.
The club’s immediate priority is to help him rediscover his form, as there appears to be something troubling the forward. The manager criticised the reaction from supporters but said only Vinicius could explain how he felt.
“If he is sad, that is something very personal,” he said. “You may have your own views, but I believe he is the only person who can tell you honestly what he feels or does not feel.”
He added: “I understand that he needs everyone’s support, and I think he needs it. Jeers when we play away from home motivate us, but when they happen at home, they hurt. As his coach, I am happy with what he has achieved.”
