Paris Saint-Germain forward Khvicha Kvaratskhelia will have surgery after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during the Champions League victory over Barcelona.
The 25-year-old Georgia captain was injured in PSG’s 4-2 home win on Tuesday, with the European champions confirming that he will undergo an operation “in the coming days”.
The club have not provided a timescale for his recovery, but the severity of the injury places his participation for the rest of the season in serious doubt. Kvaratskhelia is certain to miss PSG’s Champions League game away to Aston Villa on 8 December.
Kvaratskhelia was named the Champions League’s best player last season and has been shortlisted for the 2026 Ballon d’Or after helping PSG secure consecutive Champions League titles and Ligue 1 success.
His absence is a significant setback for a side attempting to win the Champions League for a third successive season. Kvaratskhelia joined PSG from Napoli in January 2025 in a deal worth £59m plus add-ons and has since established himself as one of the leading forwards in world football.
Dembele and Marquinhos also injured
PSG also lost France forward Ousmane Dembele and captain Marquinhos to injury during the Barcelona match.
Dembele, the reigning Ballon d’Or holder, and Marquinhos both suffered thigh problems. PSG said the pair “will remain under treatment for the next few weeks”.
Defender Nuno Mendes is another injury concern. He did not feature against Barcelona after being hurt during PSG’s Ligue 1 victory at Strasbourg on Saturday.
PSG have made an unbeaten start to their European title defence, recording 4-2 victories over both Manchester City and Barcelona this month.
Luis Enrique’s team lead the 36-team Champions League league table after winning all three of their matches. They are second in Ligue 1, level on points with leaders Lyon.
