Phil Foden scored three times and created another goal as Manchester City returned to winning ways in the Champions League group phase with a dominant victory over AEK Athens.
The England international delivered a superb individual performance as City responded emphatically to last week’s 4-2 home defeat by holders Paris St-Germain.
Enzo Maresca’s side immediately took control, with Elliot Anderson opening the scoring after Enzo Fernandez had struck the crossbar with a free-kick. Allan then hit the woodwork soon afterwards as Manchester City continued to press.
Foden doubled the advantage before half-time. The forward collected a pass from Rico Lewis and sent a powerful finish into the roof of the net, building on the first goal he had scored since December at the weekend.
AEK Athens had offered little threat during the opening period but reduced the deficit seven minutes after the restart. Full-back Stavros Pilios scored with a measured finish after the Greek side registered their first shot on target.
Manchester City quickly reasserted their authority. Foden turned provider for Rayan Cherki, who calmly stroked the ball home with a trademark finish to restore the two-goal lead.
The midfielder then completed his hat-trick in style, meeting the ball first time and sending a superb effort into the top corner. He added his third goal 11 minutes later from close range to complete an outstanding night.
Foden’s display provided the main difference in a match Manchester City controlled for long periods, while their response was particularly notable after the setback against Paris St-Germain.
Manchester City will now turn their attention to maintaining their flawless start in the Premier League. They travel to Aston Villa on Saturday for a 12:30 BST kick-off.
