Michael Carrick says Manchester United must improve defensively and start keeping more clean sheets if they are to change the course of their season.
United have conceded in nine of their 10 matches so far, with their only shutout coming against Azerbaijan champions Sabah FK last month. They face Como in the Champions League on Wednesday.
Asked whether clean sheets would make life easier and whether he had identified the reason for the problem, Carrick replied: “You’re dead right. I can’t argue with that.”
“There’s definitely parts of our game we have to improve to make things easier. I am fully aware of that,” he added.
The issue predates the current campaign. United kept six clean sheets in Carrick’s 17 matches in charge last season, including two in their final three games. Before that, they recorded only two in the entire campaign, contributing to a total of nine in 63 matches under his predecessor Ruben Amorim.
By contrast, Arsenal have kept seven clean sheets in 11 games this season. The comparison is particularly stark given defensive strength was central to their Premier League title triumph. Arsenal face Bayern Munich in Germany on Wednesday.
Carrick has rarely been able to maintain an unchanged defence. The only occasion he has selected the same back four was for the wins over Ipswich at Old Trafford on 30 August and Everton the following week, when Diogo Dalot, Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez and Luke Shaw retained their places.
His fitness update before the Como game was “a mixed bag”. Netherlands defender Matthijs de Ligt is “fit and ready” after 11 months out with a back injury that required surgery in May, but he was an unused substitute at Leeds on Sunday.
Lisandro Martinez’s thigh problem prevented him travelling to Italy, while Leny Yoro is suspended. Shaw remains unavailable and is expected to be out for “a little bit longer” than Kobbie Mainoo, who is set to miss 10 days. That could keep Shaw out until after the November international break.
United’s left-back options stretched
Dalot’s start at left-back against Leeds made him the fifth different player to begin in that position across six matches. None of the five players, other than Shaw, is a natural left-back.
United’s decision to speak to Manchester City about Algeria international Rayan Ait-Nouri on deadline day suggested the club recognised the position could become a problem. Shaw started all 38 Premier League matches last season and the first three this term, but has played only twice since; his absences could reach double figures before he returns.
Harry Amass has made one appearance this season, playing the final 18 minutes against Sabah. Carrick nevertheless believes the 19-year-old is ready to be considered.
“He’s right in contention,” Carrick said. “At some point, young players need an opportunity. It’s just finding the right time.”
Carrick also said United had made the best of a limited transfer budget, despite criticism over the failure to sign competition for Shaw.
With £50m signing Andrey Santos beside him, he said: “We had to make decisions in the summer. We did what we could do and made the best of it. This man next to us was a big part of that. I’m delighted to have him.”
