Three Ghanaian players were involved as Tottenham Hotspur came from behind to defeat Coventry City 3-1 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Monday night.
Mohammed Kudus started on the wing for Tottenham, while Brandon Thomas-Asante and Caleb Yirenkyi featured for Coventry City in a match watched closely by Ghana supporters with next month’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers approaching.
The fixture provided an opportunity to assess the three players’ current form and match readiness before Ghana face Somalia in their next qualifying assignment.
Yirenkyi was the first of the Ghanaian contingent to leave the field, being substituted in the 60th minute shortly after the start of the second half.
Thomas-Asante remained on the pitch until the 78th minute before being replaced by Ephron Mason-Clark. Kudus completed most of the match but was withdrawn with about three minutes of regulation time remaining.
Despite their substitutions, Yirenkyi and Kudus made contributions for their respective teams, while Thomas-Asante also played a part in Coventry City’s performance before his departure.
The appearances will offer further encouragement to Ghana’s technical team as it reviews the form of players based abroad ahead of the upcoming qualifiers.
Interim Black Stars coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren will be monitoring the trio’s performances at club level, with particular attention on their match fitness, consistency and overall contributions.
The form of Ghanaian players competing in Europe’s top leagues could influence Bjorkegren’s selection decisions as he prepares the squad for its next assignment.
With the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers drawing closer, the performances of Kudus, Thomas-Asante and Yirenkyi give the coaching staff additional information as the Black Stars look to strengthen their squad for the continental campaign.
